The enclosed garden, the first question of a family holiday

A rental garden that is truly safe for children shows two things: a fence that runs all the way round, and a direct view from the room you live in. In Foncine-le-Bas, Jura 835 has an enclosed garden of 400 m², south of the glazed living room. The house is let whole, to one family at a time.
What to check before booking
A listing that mentions a « garden » does not always say it is closed. Ask three questions before booking: does the fence run all the way round, or stop at the end of the lawn? Is there a road, a river or a pond beyond it? And can you see the garden from the room where you spend your days? An enclosed garden hidden behind the house still means going out to check every five minutes.
An enclosed garden, south of the house
At Jura 835, the 400 m² enclosed garden stretches south, beyond the terraces, with young fruit trees. The house forms a U open towards the garden: the glazed living room, with its open kitchen, faces due south. You chop vegetables, the children run outside, and your eyes follow them through the glass. The garden starts at the terraces and stops at the fence.
No more watching the door
It is almost always a parent’s first question: is the garden closed? Here the answer is a continuous fence. Counting heads happens from the living room, in passing. The coffee cools at its own pace, not yours. When a little one asks to go out alone, you can say yes, and say it calmly. Stay close for toddlers all the same: an enclosed garden reassures, it does not replace a watchful eye.
The garden through the seasons
In summer, the garden becomes one more room: a ball, a blanket on the grass, a snack under the young fruit trees. In winter, when snow covers it, it becomes a first sledging slope and a place to build a snowman, a few steps from the door. Bring boots and a change of clothes: children often come back in wetter than planned.
Beyond the fence
Beyond the fence, the village opens up at child height: the old voie du tram, which stretches over 11 km with little climbing, for cycling or walking, and the Langouette gorges 5 min away by road, covered in the gorges with children. The garden is the starting point in the morning and the landing spot on the way back.
The house, garden side
The house that goes with the garden is on one level: 3 bedrooms and a spare study, for 6 to 8 people. Meals move onto the terrace whenever the weather allows; naps happen with the window ajar. For families spanning several generations, the house for three generations sets out who sleeps where. Write to us with your dates and the children’s ages.
