The Bief de la Ruine waterfall, with children

Yes, the Bief de la Ruine waterfall works well with children: it falls right in the village of Foncine-le-Bas, and a few steps are enough to reach it. The water is heard long before it is seen, and the walk turns itself into a treasure hunt. From Jura 835, you leave and come back on foot.
From the door
The path leaves the last houses and slips under the trees, where the light drops a notch. The little ones walk point: first to catch the rumble wins, and the rumble always arrives before the waterfall does. The scale suits short legs, a walk for the morning or after the nap, without ever becoming an expedition, and you can stop at every bend without anyone growing impatient. For another car-free outing, the old tram line also starts from the village.
What to bring
Nothing technical. Good shoes above all, ones that shrug off damp and grip wet stone. A water bottle per child, one extra layer even in summer: the air under the trees stays cool, and falling water chills everything around it. A baby carrier for the smallest, in case the legs give out before the way back. A snack at the bottom of the bag has never weighed anyone down. Keep the phone for photos: under the trees, it is better to know the way before you set off.
At a child’s height
The waterfall is for looking at: you come close, you listen, you move on. The edges stay wet and the stones are slick; near the water you hold small hands and keep a step ahead. The rest of the path belongs to them: pebbles to pocket, a puddle to skirt or not, a stick that becomes a cane. The outing runs far beyond the waterfall itself: it is everything met on the way there, and the story told about it at the table that evening.
For older children, the loop
With children who walk well, the Parc du Haut-Jura waymarks a loop that circles the waterfall: 8.8 km with 254 m of climb, graded difficult. It is a real day’s hike, picnic included: set off early, carry plenty of water, and keep a spare snack for the last climb. For a gentler outing, the tram line, measured from the house, stretches over 11 km on a gentle gradient; you walk part of it before turning back.
Back at the house
You come home the way you went, at the children’s pace. The whole of Jura 835 goes to your family alone, at most 6 to 8 guests: yours finish the afternoon in the enclosed garden, 400 m², while the shoes dry by the stove. Tomorrow the water will still be falling, and you can go back at another hour, when the light has changed. And in winter, see our seasonal activities with children.
