Hiring a yoga retreat venue in France: what to check before you book a house

For a small yoga retreat, hiring a whole house in France gives a teacher what a retreat centre rarely does: the group alone, one price for the venue and a rhythm you set yourself. In the Haut-Jura, Jura 835 offers a single-level house for 6 to 8 people, about 1 hr 20 min by road from Geneva airport.
A house or a retreat centre
A retreat centre sells rooms, a studio and meals, often to several groups at once. A private house sells the whole place to one group: you decide when the morning practice starts, when silence begins and when the kitchen opens. For a group of six to eight, including the teacher, a house is usually the better fit, because a centre built for thirty feels empty and expensive at that size. The trade-off is that you organise more yourself, from the food to the timetable, which is also why many teachers prefer it. Before comparing prices, decide which of the two models your retreat needs; the page on one table for the whole group explains what exclusive use changes in practice.
The practice room
The first thing to check is where the group will practise, and how many mats fit there with room to move. Ask for the dimensions of the room you would use, the floor surface, the light at the hour you practise and whether furniture can be moved and put back. Here, the living room is the largest room of a house of 124 m² on one level, glazed to the south. Tell us how you plan to lay out the mats, and you will get an honest count of how many fit. The house does not supply mats or props such as blocks, straps and bolsters: bring your own kit or ask participants to bring a travel mat. When the weather allows, the garden of 400 m² gives an outdoor option.
Exclusive use and quiet
A retreat needs quiet that does not depend on the neighbours. Ask whether the house is ever shared, whether other guests or staff will be on site, and whether there is a road, a bar or a busy path nearby. Jura 835 is let to one group at a time and sits at 835 m above a village of the upper Jura, with the forest behind it. The page on silence at 835 metres describes what a day without noise looks like here. Exclusivity also matters for the practice itself: you can hold an evening session or a silent morning without explaining it to anyone.
Food: cook together or bring in help
On a retreat, meals shape the day as much as the practice. In a self-catered house, the group shops and cooks together, which keeps costs down and turns the kitchen into part of the experience. Some teachers prefer to hire a cook for the whole stay, so that the group only gathers at the table. Check the size of the kitchen and of the dining table, and whether everyone can eat together: here, one long table seats the whole group. We can put you in touch with local help on request; prices are agreed directly.
Getting the group there from the UK
Most groups from the UK fly to Geneva, which is the nearest large airport. From there the drive takes about 1 hr 20 min on a dry road; one or two hire cars are enough for the whole group. Those who prefer the train can travel to Frasne, about 40 min by road from the house, and be collected there. Set one arrival window for everyone, ideally the early afternoon, so that the first session starts with the whole group in the room. In winter, ask the rental company for winter tyres or a set of snow chains. France’s loi Montagne makes that equipment compulsory on these roads every winter, from November to March.
The price of the venue
A house is priced for the whole place, not per participant. The public rate here starts at €4,200 for seven nights; shorter stays can be discussed depending on the dates. To set your retreat price, add the venue, food, travel within France, your teaching fee and a margin, then divide by the number of paying participants. A retreat for eight that only fills six should still cover its costs, so set your break-even on the lower number. Sizing the group is covered in planning a retreat for eight.
Asking for a quote
Send us the dates you have in mind, the number of participants and the style of practice you teach, and we will tell you plainly what the house allows and what it does not. A short video call before you book is often the quickest way to check the practice room together.
