Silence at 835 metres, in numbers

At night, at 835 m above Foncine-le-Bas, you can hear the silence: an owl, wind in the spruces, often nothing at all. The village turns its windows dark early, and the Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura does the rest. That is the dark in which Jura 835 stands, a timber house that only ever takes one group.
Silence, in numbers
Foncine-le-Bas has 203 inhabitants, according to the census relayed by the French interior ministry. The house stands at 835 m, above the village. Around it, on a square of terrain measured by the IGN, the lowest point is the Saine, at 769 m, and the highest the wooded crest, at 1,063 m. Between the two, little is left to make noise: a road that falls quiet after dinner, a few farms, the forest. The dark is close to complete once the village windows go out.
What you hear at night
By day you walk down the meadow to hear the Saine run between the stones; its source springs further up the valley, as the walk to the source describes. At night, window open: a bird of prey, an animal crossing the meadow, the roof frame settling. On the first evening this almost-nothing startles you. On the second it becomes normal. On the third you sleep without giving it a thought. Many then leave the window ajar until morning.
Days, slowed down
The day has the same grain as the night. You walk from the door, up the meadow toward the wooded crest, meeting hardly anyone; you read by the stove, you make more coffee. Nobody rings the bell; the only expected visitor is the mist, drifting down toward the village late in the afternoon. A whole day fits inside one walk and one book, with room to spare for a nap or a long conversation. To switch off screens too, see a digital detox in a whole house.
A house that keeps quiet
The house is a single-storey timber build set in the meadow above the village. The bedrooms sit in two wings, either side of the big room: nobody sleeps against other people’s conversation. No radiator clanks in the night, and the house holds its warmth without a sound. Up to 6 to 8 guests share 3 bedrooms, and two groups never overlap.
Permission to slow down
You end up believing rest requires a programme. What it mostly requires is a place that asks nothing of you, rarer goods than any spa, and seldom found in a hotel. The silence here cannot be booked by the hour: it was there before you arrived, and it will stay after you leave. The entire property is yours, with weekly rates starting at €4,200.
