A week of reflection in November

By Robin — your host · 12 July 2026 · updated 11 October 2026 · 2 min read · Our method

A week of reflection in November needs very little: a warm house, no agenda, and nobody asking how it is going. November is the Jura’s in-between, after the hikers and before the skiers. Jura 835, above Foncine-le-Bas, is then let whole, to you alone or to your small circle.

November, the in-between

By November the ski season has not started and the summer visitors have gone. What remains is the forest, the fire and the mist rising off the river at first light. No slot to keep. The day begins when you get up and ends when the stove goes out. A week is often enough to feel the difference between the year’s tiredness and plain rest. Arrive without a list of resolutions: the week brings up what matters on its own.

The house in the quiet season

The house takes your group and no other, and November is where it proves itself. The house is a near-passive timber-frame house, built to France’s RE2020 standard at its strictest 2031 thresholds: outside the thermometer drops, inside the warmth holds steady from morning to night, and the stove adds flame more than heat. You leave a fleece by the door for the day’s walk; indoors, life happens in socks. The fibre (1 Gbit/s) stays available if you must remain reachable; otherwise you forget it.

Walking from the door

November walks are the simplest of the year. The river runs below: on the elevation grid measured around the house, it is the lowest point, at 769 m, and you go down to it across the meadow, mist included. For a longer walk, the Rapoutier path loops for 6.8 km, about 2 hr 15 min of walking. The colours are turned down and you meet more or less no one; see also the walk up to where the Saine rises.

A day without a programme

A week of reflection does not need a timetable, but a thread helps. In the morning, a time of writing or reading, before breakfast. In late morning, the walk. The afternoon belongs to each person: a nap, a book, nothing at all. In the evening, the fire and a simple meal. Each night, note one sentence from the day; read back at the end of the week, the list often says more than long reflections. Keep the notebook to yourself; it does not need to be shared.

Alone or led

The retreat is yours. Come alone to read, write or do nothing; or as a few, with someone to guide you. The house has 3 bedrooms and a study, room to withdraw without losing sight of one another, as our page on the quiet of the nights describes. Geneva is roughly 1 hr 15 min by car: far enough to switch off, near enough to come. The whole house, from €4,200 a week. Write to us with your November week.
