Cross country skiing near Geneva: the French Jura Nordic ski areas with their track lengths, our measured drives, and a house to ski from

Cross country skiing near Geneva does not have to mean the Swiss Jura or a long drive to the Alps. Across the border, the plateau on the French side holds several Nordic ski areas with hundreds of kilometres of groomed track and no lift queue. This page lists them with their published track lengths and our measured drives. It also describes a whole house to ski from on the plateau.

Why the French side

From Geneva, the nearest serious nordic skiing lies in the Jura, and its French side offers long networks of groomed trails, lower prices and quieter car parks. The nearest trails lie at Foncine-le-Haut between 900 m and 1,260 m, which is where the snow holds in a normal winter. Several areas lie on the GTJ, the long-distance nordic route, 185 km long according to Jura Tourisme. None of this requires a lift pass; a day trail pass and a car are enough.

The Nordic ski areas, with their published figures

Foncine-le-Haut, 10 min from the house on our route calculation, grooms 110 km of track across 18 marked trails, on Jura Tourisme’s figures. Chapelle-des-Bois, 30 min away, is listed by guides at 127 km of nordic track. Les Rousses, 30 min by car, is the largest, with 148 km across its 4 sites according to Jura Tourisme. Mouthe, 20 min away, adds 59 km. The Foncine-le-Haut Nordic ski area, trail by trail covers the nearest one.

A weekend, measured from the airport

Geneva airport to the house takes 1 hr 20 min on our route calculation. That makes a Friday-evening departure and 2 full days on the tracks realistic without a dawn start. Leave the airport after work, sleep on the plateau, and be at Foncine-le-Haut on freshly groomed trails. Sunday afternoon leaves time for a second area before the drive back, since none of them is more than an hour apart by car. Skiers arriving by train from Paris reach Frasne, where we can collect them. From that station the house is another 40 min by road. For a full week, the cross-country ski holiday page lays out the days.

The house as a nordic base

Jura 835 sits 835 m up in Foncine-le-Bas, which puts you on the plateau rather than in the valley below it. The house takes 6 to 8 skiers across 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, everything on 1 level. There is a ski room with space to dry your kit: wet boots dry there and skis get waxed, and the big room is for spreading out maps. It is let whole, so a club or 2 families have the kitchen and the long table to themselves. Waxing happens by the door, drying happens overnight, and the morning starts with skis already in the car. A 1 Gbit/s fibre line is there for the colleague who has to join a call on Monday morning before driving back.

The race on the doorstep

The Transjurassienne, the Jura’s classic ski marathon, is run on 13–14 February 2027 over 50 km according to its organisers. Its new reference course runs from Lamoura to Les Rousses. Skiers who want to preview the course come for a weekend earlier in the winter. Skiers who want to race book the house early, because the plateau fills that week. Where to sleep for the Transjurassienne has the practical side.

Snow, honestly, and gear

We do not guarantee snow. The plateau holds it better than the valleys, and the areas groom as soon as the cover allows, but a mild January happens. The Nordic ski areas publish their open trails daily and we point you to them before you drive up. Bring your own skis or hire them in the resorts. The house has no hire shop. If the snow fails, the same tracks become walking routes and the snowshoeing page covers the higher ground that keeps its cover longest.

Cost and how to ask

The house rents whole, €4,200 upwards for a week. Weekends depend on the winter calendar, so ask. Shared between 6 to 8 skiers it costs less than a resort apartment each, and the trail passes are a small line beside it. Tell us the dates, the group and whether you ski classic or skate. The reply will say plainly which areas suit you and what the snow is doing that week.
