Skiing in the French Jura: Les Rousses, Métabief and a quieter kind of ski week

Most visitors know the French Jura for cross-country skiing, but it also has two downhill resorts within an easy drive of Jura 835: Les Rousses, on the Swiss border, and Métabief, below Mont d’Or. They are smaller than the Alps, with gentle slopes, short queues and family prices. Here is what each offers, and how to combine them in one week.

Les Rousses and the Jura sur Léman area

The downhill area of Les Rousses, called Jura sur Léman, straddles the French–Swiss border. According to the resort, its Dôle and Tuffes sector alone counts 33 runs covering 29 km, and the summit of La Dôle reaches 1,677 m, with a view over Lake Geneva and the Alps on clear days. The area belongs to the Magic Pass, which opens nearly 100 mountain destinations to season-pass holders.

A resort for families and beginners

Les Rousses suits families well. The resort runs a beginner area with a rope tow at La Serra, safe spaces for sledging near the slopes, and ski schools in Les Rousses and Lamoura. The pistes are mostly green and blue, so a mixed group can ski together. From the house, Les Rousses is 30 min away by car, an easy morning drive.

Métabief, below Mont d’Or

Métabief sits on the slopes of Mont d’Or, just across the line in the Doubs. It is a compact resort with linked runs, a good choice for a day of change during the week. Published figures for its slopes differ from one source to another, so check the resort map before you go. The drive to Métabief takes 40 min.

Who Jura skiing suits

Jura skiing is for those who value calm over altitude: families with young children, beginners, groups with mixed levels, and experienced skiers who want a relaxed week rather than a challenge. Expert skiers chasing steep terrain will find more in the Alps. In exchange, the Jura offers shorter queues, forested slopes that stay readable in poor light, and an atmosphere closer to a village than to a ski factory.

Lessons and equipment

Both resorts have ski schools, and the Les Rousses resort lists schools in Les Rousses and Lamoura. Book lessons well ahead for the February holidays, when French, Swiss and German school breaks overlap and group classes fill quickly. Equipment can be hired at the foot of the slopes or in the villages; reserving online usually saves time on the first morning. Helmets are worth it for children, and a pair of thin gloves under the ski gloves keeps small hands warm on the lifts. Ask us before you arrive and we can point you to local contacts on request.

Snow and timing

Mid-altitude resorts depend on the winter. The heart of the season, from late December to early March, gives the best chance of good snow. Check the resorts’ snow reports and lift status before you drive, and keep a plan B: on days when the downhill slopes struggle, cross-country trails, which need less snow cover, often stay open. Our guide to a cross-country ski holiday covers those trails.

A week from one house

A whole house lets a group mix activities across the week: two or three days of downhill at Les Rousses, a day at Métabief, a day of cross-country skiing, and a day on snowshoes through the forest. For that last one, see our snowshoeing page. Non-skiers have options too: in the Fort des Rousses, Comté wheels mature in vaulted cellars kept at about 8 °C, a visit that fills a grey afternoon. In the evening everyone comes back to the same table, whatever they chose to do, and plans the next day around the snow report.

Getting there, and the house

Most international visitors fly into Geneva; the house is 1 hr 20 min from the airport by road; in winter the prefecture expects snow-rated tyres on that drive, or chains or socks stowed in the car. Jura 835 puts 6 to 8 guests in 3 bedrooms on a single level, at 835 m, with room to dry boots and gloves overnight. 7 nights in the house cost from €4,200, shared by the whole group.
