A first family ski trip in the French Jura: small areas with published figures, nordic trails for children, a toboggan run, and a house to come home to

A first family ski trip fails on two things: a resort too big for a 5-year-old and a bill too big for a week of falling over. The French Jura answers both with small ski areas, nordic trails graded for children, a long toboggan run, and a whole house on the plateau to come home to. This page gives the published figures, the drives, and the honest limits.

Why not the Alps, the first time

What a first ski trip decides is whether the children want to come back, far more than which mountain they skied. Big Alpine resorts offer long lifts, long queues and long bills, none of which help a 6-year-old on day 2. The French Jura offers the opposite. Its areas are small, with the car park next to the nursery slope. Its nordic trails let the whole family move at the same speed. And when snow comes, it lies around the house, not after a shuttle bus ride. The trade is honest: less vertical drop, more patience, far less money.

The alpine areas, with their published figures

Métabief is one of the two larger downhill areas within reach: 40 min of driving from our door, by the route we measured ourselves. Les Rousses, the other, is closer at 30 min. Its cross-border Dôle-Tuffes sector counts 33 slopes totalling 29 km in the resort’s own figures, below La Dôle, the summit on the Swiss side at 1,677 m. The resort belongs to the Magic Pass network of nearly 100 destinations. Neither is Val d’Isère, which is the point: a child can see the whole area from the bottom. Our family holiday page sets these areas in the wider week for parents who want to compare.

Nordic skiing, where children keep up

For a first trip, cross-country skiing often beats downhill: the children skip the lift queue and never pick up frightening speed. The Foncine-le-Haut Nordic ski area, a 10 min drive away, grooms 18 trails of which 9 are graded green on Jura Tourisme’s trail map, which is where a 7-year-old learns to glide. Children who tire ride in a pulk, a small sledge towed by a parent on skis. Nobody waits at the bottom of anything. The winter family page describes the plateau in snow for the days without skis.

The toboggan run that saves the afternoon

When the morning on skis has used up everybody’s goodwill, Métabief’s rail toboggan run is open from age 3 according to the station, with an adult required for the smallest riders. It is the reward that turns a hard first day into a good memory, and it costs a fraction of a lift pass. Back at the house, the garden becomes the free version with a plastic sledge, which most children prefer anyway.

The house after the slopes

Jura 835’s altitude is 835 m, in Foncine-le-Bas, which is plateau snow country rather than a resort. 6 to 8 people spread over 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, every room on one level, so wet children and tired grandparents use the same corridor without a stair. The ski room swallows boots and gloves overnight, the long table holds the hot chocolate, and the garden, 400 m² and fenced, is the snowman site. The booking is always for the whole house, so a family with a friend’s family has it to themselves.

Honest limits

We cannot guarantee snow: the plateau holds it better than the valleys, but a mild February happens, and the areas publish their open slopes daily. We do not run a ski school, hire equipment or sell lift passes; the resorts do, and we point you to them before you book. The Jura areas close earlier in spring than the Alps, so a first trip belongs in January or February. If the children already ski red runs, they will find the Jura small; if they have never clipped in, it is one of the gentlest starts in France.

Getting here with small children

Geneva airport to our door: 1 hr 20 min along the road we measured, one nap for a toddler. Paris to Frasne by the quickest train: 2 hr 48 min, then 40 min more of road to the house; bring the car seats. Between November and March, the French mountain law expects cars on the plateau roads to have winter tyres fitted or snow chains on board. Both ski areas are close by car. A child who melts down can be home within the hour.

What the week costs

The whole house rents at €4,200 and upwards for a week. Add the lift tickets or trail passes from the resorts, the hire shop and the toboggan ride. The total still sits well below a catered chalet in the Alps for the same family. Write with your dates, the ages of the children and whether anyone has skied before. We will say plainly which area to start on and what the snow is doing that week.
